Usagi Yojimbo #17 continues the Tengu War, where Usagi and his former sensei, Sojobu, have their backs against the wall. With defeat staring them directly in the face, an unforeseen ally enters the fray allowing Usagi and Sojobo to live to fight another battle.

Honor is always at the forefront of Stan Sakai’s stories, and we see that on full display in Usagi Yojimbo #17. Whether it’s the honor of defending one’s land, or knowing when to take a life, Sakai weaves this into his storytelling so well — knowing that Usagi will always take the moral high ground is refreshing.

We also get some tense moments embedded throughout this story. From the opening battle to a duel to determine one’s worthiness, Usagi Yojimbo #17 packs quite the punch.

In addition to the anxious moments and traditional Sakai action sequences, we are also introduced to a new character. Nothing is ever as it seems with Sakai — and while it appears Usagi and Sojobu may have gained the partner they need to win this war, something tells me that may not be the case.

Overall the Tengu War storyline has been very enjoyable to read, providing both action and engaging storytelling.
